Files may be stored in either an editable ("open")
or an un-editable ("closed") format. If a file is
supplied to us in a closed format then it is much harder to
modify and even relatively simple changes can be time consuming
and expensive.
Common editable or "open"
file formats:
Graphic design applications
Adobe Photoshop (.psd)
Adobe Illustrator (.ai)
Adobe PageMaker (.pmX)
Adobe InDesign
Macromedia FreeHand (.fhXX)
CorelDRAW (.cdr)
Quark (.qxd)
Microsoft applications *
Microsoft Word (.doc)
Microsoft Excel (.xls)
Microsoft Paint Bitmap (.bmp)
Microsoft Publisher (.pub)
Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt)
* Microsoft file formats are not preferred
as they often use RGB (Red-Green-Blue) colour rather than CMYK (Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black) and they do
not provide the same graphic design capabilities as other
commercially available software.
Common un-editable or "closed"
file formats:
Image formats
TIFF - Tagged Image File Format (.tif/.tiff)
JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpg/.jpeg)
